| The
Coeur d’Alene, Kalispel, Kootenai, Nez Perce, Shoshone-Bannock,
and Paiute Indians inhabited the Idaho territory long before the arrival
of Lewis and Clark in 1805. The Lewis and Clark expedition traversed
the rugged Clearwater Mountains at Lolo Pass and followed the Clearwater
River to its junction with the Snake River. Lewis and Clark explored the area for the United States. They met with the native tribes and paved the way for the fur trappers and traders who would follow. During the 1820s, the North West Fur Trading Company established several posts in the area. Trappers traveling through the Great Basin were the first to reach the site of present-day Boise. La Rivie’re Bois’e was the name they gave the river and surrounding wooded area. |
